There are three main categories for help and financial assistance: Local Authorities, Energy companies, and Government Programmes.

LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Many local Authorities offer grants, depending on your means, for insulation and new technologies.

Though these are generally for the easier targets such as cavity wall and loft insulation, the more difficult issues of solids walls are belatedly being addressed.

Energy companies are now involved with the new Carbon Emission Reduction Target (CERT) scheme.

This obliges them to contribute to reducing the installation costs for certain energy saving measures. A consumer can access the offers available from any of the suppliers regardless of who is their own supplier.

GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES
Certain Benefit recipients can access insulation and heating improvements of £3500 or up to £6000 at www.warmfront.co.uk.

For those over 60s who are ineligible there may be a £300 rebate toward heating systems in English Local Authorities.

Householders looking to install solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps or biomass boilers can apply for up to £2500 from the low carbon buildings programme at www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk.
